WBA Welterweight Championship
Manny Pacquiao v Adrien Broner
Sunday, 20 January 2019
MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, United States
The meeting of Manny Pacquiao and Adrien Broner for the WBA Welterweight title promises to be one of the best boxing matches in 2019. The fight is set for the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, United States on Sunday 20 January 2019.
The challenger Broner (33-3-1, 1 NC) comes into the bout looking to shrug off the tag of being a career underachiever. The 29-year-old has had three defeats to current or former world champions in Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter and Mikey Garcia – undermining his hopes of reaching the peak of the sport.
Pacquiao (60-7-2), by contrast, is a boxing legend in his own right. The eight-time world champion will be having his 70th professional fight and continues to defy his critics, who suggest he should stayed in retirement when he walked away from the sport in 2016.
A contentious loss to Australian Jeff Horn in 2017 suggested they were right, but ‘Pac Man’ bounced back with a victory over Lucas Martin Matthysse to win the WBA Welterweight championship last July.
Pacquiao, with his experience and pedigree, is the favourite for the fight despite being 11 years older than Broner (who is also taller and has a longer reach). In fact, the Filipino has declared his intention to knock the American out and inflict a fourth career defeat on him.
