The Zambia Women’s National Team, known as the Copper Queens, will open their Olympic campaign on July 25 against the United States of America at the Stade de Nice. They will then face Australia three days later at the same venue, with their final group match against Germany in St Etienne on July 31.
The Copper Queens had an international friendly match against New Zealand on July 13 in Lyon, France, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Zambia and Nigeria are the only representatives from the African continent in the Women’s Football category. This isn't Zambia’s first appearance at the Olympics; they made their debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Despite being eliminated in the group stage, the Copper Queens made history as the sole representatives of the continent at the tournament. During the 2020 Olympics, Captain Barbra Banda made history with her outstanding performances.
With this being the Copper Queens' second Olympic appearance, Zambia’s technical bench is confident they will build on the lessons from their Tokyo 2020 experience. The players have since 2020 competed at the FIFA World Cup, Olympics, and won bronze at the WAFCON, putting them in a strong position ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Copper Queens Captain Barbra Banda has high ambitions as she prepares for her second Women's Olympic Football Tournament at Paris 2024. At just 24, Banda has already amassed numerous individual achievements while helping her team. In 2018, she became the first Zambian player to join a European club when she signed with Spanish team Logroño. At Tokyo 2020, she made history by becoming the first player to score hat-tricks in back-to-back Olympic matches.
Another notable player is Rachel Kundananji, who has been excelling in her career. In January, she made history by joining USA-based team Bay FC, becoming the most expensive female player in the world.
The Copper Queens are determined to make their mark at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and with the experience and talent they bring, fans have high hopes for their performance.
