Zambia secured a one-all draw against DR Congo in their first match at the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), in San Pedro, Ivory Coast, this past Wednesday evening.
Despite facing pressure from Congo right from the start, Zambia managed to score first in the 23rd minute. Kings Kangwa seized an opportunity arising from a goalkeeper mistake to make it 1-0.
However, despite taking the lead, Zambia struggled to make significant advances, with Patson Daka and Fashion Sakala unable to launch effective attacks. The team lacked an attacking spark, and the Congolese side persisted in pressuring the Zambian defenders, resulting in Yoane Wissa converting Bakambu’s cross just before half-time, leveling the score at 1-1.
The second half saw DR Congo maintaining their attacking momentum, with Wissa and Bakambu continuing to threaten the Zambian side.
Zambia's 2012 AFCON-winning defender, Stophila Sunzu, showcased his experience in the game as he contributed from the back.

In the 60th minute, the Leopards (DR Congo) believed they had earned a penalty when Tandi Mwape appeared to handle the ball in the box. However, VAR dramatically overturned the decision, and in the end, both teams had to settle for a draw.
Following the draw, DR Congo sits behind Morocco in the standings due to goal difference, as Morocco secured a 3-0 victory against Tanzania earlier. This win places Morocco at the top of Group F with three points, followed by DR Congo and Zambia, each earning a point.
Looking ahead, DR Congo is set to face Morocco on Sunday, January 21, at the Stade Laurent Pokou in San Pedro, while Zambia will take on Tanzania in their upcoming match.
