2024-25 Spanish La Liga
Matchday 31
Athletic Bilbao v Rayo Vallecano
Estadio San Mames
Bilbao, Spain
Sunday, 13 April 2025
Kick-off is at 21h00
Athletic Bilbao will be targeting an improved finish to the
La Liga season as they prepare to host Rayo Vallecano at San Mames on Sunday, April 13 in the late kick-off.
The Lions have left the door slightly ajar in the race for UEFA Champions League football after winning just three of their last 10 games.
Ernesto Valverde's side drew 0-0 with top-four rivals Villarreal on April 6 to maintain the six-point gap to the Yellow Submarine (5th) and Real Betis (6th).
Athletic are unbeaten in their last four matches, but they've only picked up six points during that run and have played one game more than the Castellon outfit.
The Red Sashes face competition to finish in the top half of the table after winning just one of their last seven encounters.
Inigo Perez's side suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of Espanyol on April 4 which allowed Celta Vigo (7th) and Real Sociedad (8th) to climb above them, while Real Mallorca (10th) and Getafe (11th) are breathing down their necks.
Rayo are tied with the Pirates on 40 points and only one ahead of the Azulones in the battle for a top-10 finish with eight fixtures remaining in the campaign.
Valverde believes Athletic are well placed to qualify for Europe's elite club competition and has urged his players to keep working hard to achieve that goal.
"It's one point more and one game less. We have to keep going. We're in a good position and, considering that we're in another competition and still coping well, we have to be happy," the Spaniard said.
"We want Athletic to be playing in Europe again next year. There's still a long way to go and our opponents are unforgiving. It's difficult, but thrilling at the same time."
