Lewis Hamilton’s disappointing seventh-place finish at the Japanese Grand Prix last Sunday will surely motivate the Ferrari driver to do better at the upcoming
Bahrain Grand Prix taking place on Sunday, 13 April.
Hamilton has challenged his Ferrari team to step up their game as he described the car he used at the Japanese GP as “underperforming” in the wake of a disappointing opening to the F1 season.
Max Verstappen grabbed the win at Suzuka, but Hamilton had a tricky afternoon. He qualified in eighth and despite trying a different strategy using the hard tyre to open, made up only one place to pass Isack Hadjar in the Alpine.
Despite winning the sprint race in China, Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari have had a difficult start to the season.
Hamilton struggled in Australia and was disqualified from the feature race in China due to a technical infringement. This is a disappointing start for a team expected to challenge for the title after a strong finish to 2024.
Hamilton feels his teammate, Charles Leclerc, is adapting better to the car. "I'm really hoping in the next race we'll see hopefully some positive changes," he stated.
"Through the first three races there's been a bit of a deficit between both sides of the garage on some elements of the car. On my side, underperforming. With what I had, that is the best result I could get."
While acknowledging his adjustment to a new team will take time, Hamilton believes Ferrari should be making more progress, even by the next race in Bahrain.
"My pace was maximum today. I didn't have anything else in the car. Underperformance happening at the rear of the car this weekend and obviously qualifying position is key,” Hamilton said.
“I'm hoping the next race we will be closer. It will definitely be interesting for sure."
2025 Japanese Grand Prix results:
Winner: Max Verstappen – Red Bull Racing
Second-place: Lando Norris – McLaren
Third-place: Oscar Piastri – McLaren
