What to know about the Japanese Grand Prix
Established in 1963, historically, this race has been one of the last races of the season, and as such, the Japanese Grand Prix has been the venue for many title-deciding races.
Thirteen World Drivers' Champions have been crowned over the 38 World Championship Japanese Grands Prix that have been hosted and the event is due to take place at the Suzuka Circuit until at least 2029.
Most recent race
The Chinese Grand Prix, which was the second round of the 2025 Formula One World Championship, was won by Oscar Piastri of McLaren on 23 March.
McLaren driver Lando Norris and George Russell of Mercedes finished second and third, respectively, at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Standings
Norris is placed at the top of the World Drivers' Championship standings, having finished in the top two in the first two races in the current season.
Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen and Russell are placed second and third, respectively, in the standings, as they battle for the championship.
Favourites
Currently placed fourth in the World Drivers' Championship standings, Piastri, Verstappen, Russell and Norris are the hot favourites to win the Japanese Grand Prix.
Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton is the second most successful driver in the history of the Japanese Grand Prix, having won the race five times and he will be targeting a record equaling sixth win in Japan.
Quotes
"Tough day but a positive weekend overall and we’ve made some good progress since Melbourne. We tried some new set up changes for qualifying and the race that didn’t work out," Hamilton said after winning the Chinese Grand Prix sprint event and finishing fifth in the race.
"But that’s a learning [curve] we can take with us moving forward. I got a good start off the line but started to struggle with pace as the race continued, so I suggested swapping with Charles to try and maximise our opportunities as a team. The two-stop strategy helped find some good pace towards the final few laps
"But unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to gain places. We’ll go through everything, take the learnings, and come back stronger. It’s a long road to the championship, and we’ll keep pushing.
