2024/25 La Liga
Matchday 33
Athletic Bilbao v Las Palmas
San Mamés Stadium
Bilbao, Spain
Wednesday, 23 April 2025
Kick-off is at 19:00
Athletic Bilbao will seek to keep up the momentum for a spot in the UEFA Champions League when they lock horns with relegation-threatened Las Palmas at the San Mamés Stadium on Wednesday night, 23 April.
Following a narrow 1-0 loss to Real Madrid in their last
La Liga match, Bilbao will use the opportunity to get back on track when they go up against Las Palmas.
As they continue to impress in Europe at large, head coach Ernesto Valverde has hailed his team for their determination to succeed.
"This team has the possibility of reaching a final. We knew our fans would be fully behind us. By connecting with our people, we are a powerful team,” he said.
Despite the disappointing last minute loss to Real Madrid, Valverde gave credit where it was due but also noted that Bilbao is facing a very congested fixture schedule.
“We were struggling. The distance in games lasting three to four days is crucial, and we have another game on Wednesday. We must use the entire squad,” he added.
“The problem isn’t that we don’t have 72 hours of rest; the problem is that the Las Palmas game could have been on Thursday instead of Wednesday. The priority should be sporting.
“Playing these kinds of games that demand so much from you is very good for us, and we hope it will also help us in the games we have against Manchester United.”
On the other hand, Las Palmas are fighting against relegation from the top-flight, as they languish in 17
th position in the La Liga rankings.
The team is undergoing a bit of a resurgence however, winning two fixtures in a row with their most recent result being a shock 1-0 win over third-placed Atletico Madrid.
Javi Munoz, who scored the last minute winner in the match against Atletico, is backing his teammates to continue the fight against the dreaded drop.
"There's a lot of fighting left but we're going to fight until the end. Let's enjoy the victory and hope it helps us to keep believing that the team can do it,” Munoz remarked.
