Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton is hoping to get more out of the W14 car at the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, May 7 after admitting to battling with its performance in the opening two months of the season.

The record seven-time World Champion endured a disappointing 2022 after finishing a massive 214 points behind Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen in sixth place, having gone head to head with the Dutchman the previous year before losing out on the title in the final race.

The new car is still lagging behind the RB19, although there were signs of promise at the Australian Grand Prix, where Hamilton came in just 0.179 seconds after race winner Verstappen in second place.

It was the first podium of the year for Mercedes after Hamilton's team-mate, George Russell, came up just short at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with P4.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was the worst to date for the Silver Arrows, with Hamilton only managing P6, while Russell crossed the finishing line in P8.

The 38-year-old remained fourth in the drivers' standings but saw the gap to Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso widen to 12 points and he hopes Mercedes will pose a stronger challenge when the upgrades are implemented.

"The car is really hard to drive this year but every now and then it feels better for me," he said after the race in Baku.

"Today wasn't perfect but I had pretty decent pace. It just shows we are on the right path and I think once we get the upgrades, we'll be in a much better place."

2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix results:

Winner: Sergio Perez - Red Bull Racing
Second Place: Max Verstappen - Red Bull Racing
Third Place: Charles Leclerc - Ferrari
