Pep Guardiola saluted another fantastic performance from his side and was pleased to see their work ethic on display once more as they work towards lifting club football biggest prize this season.

"Tonight we see the reasons why the last years have been successful for this club," Guardiola said. "After United, we were able to be humble enough to respect the opponent. This is the secret of this game.

"It was the work ethic. This is the reason why this season and seasons before with different players, every three days we are there.

"This is the biggest title we can get. Beyond the Premier League, Champions League ... everything. This is the best. We played really well, the performance beyond the result was magnificent."

The Danish champions bring up the rear in the group after going winless in their opening three matches, having picked up a solitary point in a goalless draw with Sevilla on matchday 2.

Jacob Neestrup's team have yet to score in the group stages and the head coach acknowledged there is are lessons to be learned after they met a vastly superior force in Manchester.

"It's never nice to lose 5-0 and we went in to make the small or big miracle it would be to get points, but we just met the superiority, just like 100 other teams have done against City," Neestrup reflected.

"So it's deserved to lose 5-0, but not a nice feeling when you're in it. I think the team fought as well as they could, but it is clear that there is always something that both us coaches and the players can do better."
