How things currently stand in the UEFA Champions League

This season's UEFA Champions League would have been nearing its conclusion this month.

However, the world's most glamourous club competition was suspended last month due to the coronavirus pandemic in Europe.

This after the first set of round of 16 second leg matches which saw the defending champions Liverpool FC bow out of the tournament.

The English giants were eliminated by former Spanish champions Atletico Madrid, who emerged 4-2 on aggregate after extra-time.

French champions Paris Saint Germain (PSG) also booked their place in the quarter-finals after defeating German giants Borussia Dortmund 3-2 on aggregate.

PSG, who boast some of the best players in the world in Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, are looking to go all the way and clinch their maiden Champions League title this season.

There was a huge upset in the round of 16 when two-time runners-up Valencia of Spain were stunned by tournament debutants Atalanta of Italy.

German side RB Leipzig also caused an upset when they eliminated last season's runners-up Tottenham Hotspur, who were without their injured talisman Harry Kane.

The second set of round of 16 second-leg matches which were scheduled to be played on February 25 and 26 were postponed.

Spanish champions FC Barcelona were set to host Italian side Napoli having drawn 1-1 in the first-leg game, while Italian giants Juventus were hoping to overturn a 1-0 deficit against French outfit Lyon.

German champions Bayern Munich, who won 3-0 in the first-leg game, were scheduled to host English giants Chelsea, while Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid are trailing 2-1 on aggregate against England's Manchester City.

The quarter-final, semi-final and final matches have since been postponed indefinitely due to the deadly disease.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin recently announced that they are looking to ensure that the competition is finished no later than August 3.

“On August 3rd everything must be finished, both in the Champions League and Europa League," Ceferin told German broadcaster ZDF.

"The situation is extraordinary. We can play on the same dates as the national leagues, at the same time, we must be flexible. If the crisis stops, we will start earlier.”

The European football's governing body also stated that they will consider all the possibilities before making a final decision regarding when the competition can resume, considering the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
