The two clubs are amongst the most successful in the tournament's prestigious history and have a combined 19 European Cup successes between them, with Real's haul of 13 six more than any other team.

While Los Blancos have struggled to keep up with LaLiga leaders Atletico Madrid for most of the campaign, they still harbour hopes of defending the league title they won last season.

In contrast, Liverpool's chances of back-to-back Premier League titles are all but over. The Reds have plummeted down the league standings on the back of six successive defeats at Anfield, but Zidane knows better than not to write off the six-time champions.

"We cannot say that it is a bad draw or that it is good, because what happens throughout the season does not matter," Zidane said.

"It doesn't matter how Liverpool are in their league today because at any time, in a tie, they can play their cards without looking at how they are doing in their championship.

"We know who Liverpool are and that is not going to change. It's like us, who have been on the edge of the precipice, but we are alive in both competitions.

"It will be a match between two teams that have won many Champions League [trophies], a very complicated tie. At that level it is always very difficult to win," he added.

The two teams last came to blows in the 2018 final in Kiev with Real emerging 3-1 winners in a drama-filled encounter that had it all.

The second-leg is set to take place at Anfield on 14th of April.
