2021/22 Italian Serie A

Matchday 24

Inter Milan v AC Milan

San Siro
Milan, Italy
Saturday, 5 February 2022
Kick-off is at 19h00

AC Milan will be looking to earn the bragging rights in the city for the first time since October 2020 when they face Inter Milan in the 230th Derby della Madonnina at the San Siro on Saturday, February 5.

The Rossoneri haven't had much success against their arch-rivals of late, winning just one of their last five meetings in Serie A, with the Nerazzurri emerging victorious on three occasions.

Stefano Pioli's side come into the derby on the back of a goalless draw with Juventus on January 23, which extended their winless run to two matches after they were beaten 2-1 by Spezia six days earlier.

Milan dropped to third in the table on 49 points, four adrift of their neighbours at the league summit, although Inter do have a game in hand.

However, Pioli acknowledged the point gained against the Bianconeri could be important in the title race, with Napoli also in the mix after moving up to second place.

"Our glass is half empty for the missed points against Spezia, not for tonight's game. The team knows that with Juve and Inter we will decide a lot about our future," he told DAZN after the Juve clash.

"If we win the derby we can still be attached to Inter, if we don't succeed then it will be a season like last year in which we finished second on the last day, but in which we also risked finishing fifth."

Inter's 2-1 win over Venezia on January 22 saw their unbeaten run stretch to 14 games since suffering a 3-1 defeat to Lazio on October 16 - their only loss of the season thus far.

Head coach Simone Inzaghi stressed the importance of keeping the momentum going as they look to challenge for silverware on three fronts.

"This victory today is worth more than three points because in our last 10 games we've won nine and drawn one," Inzaghi said after beating the Leoni Alati.

"We're through to the next round of the Champions League and the Coppa Italia and we've won the Super Cup. These are all good signs. We want to keep going in every competition but we know it's going to become more and more difficult with every passing week.

"We'll enjoy this win now, rest up a bit, and then from Wednesday we'll get back to work with those who aren't away on international duty, and start focusing on the derby."
