9-12 February 2023
Rory McIlroy will be a clear favourite to win the
WM Phoenix Open for the first time in his illustrious career.
What to know about McIlroy
The Northern Irish superstar is the current world number one in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), and has spent over 100 weeks in that position during his career.
Nicknamed Rors, McIlroy is a four-time major champion, winning the 2011 US Open, 2012 PGA Championship, 2014 Open Championship and 2014 PGA Championship.
Rors, who is a member of both the European and PGA Tours, has won 36 professional tournaments and he is considered by some to be one of the greatest European golfers of all-time.
Latest News
McIlroy took part in the 2023 Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the European Tour and he won the tournament as he consolidated his spot at the top of the OWGR.
The 33-year-old birdied the final two holes to beat Patrick Reed by one shot and he won the Dallah Trophy for a record equaling three times having also clinched it in 2009 and 2015.
Rors then took a short break from professional golf and he is now set to tee off at the TPC Scottsdale - Stadium Course where he is the highest ranked player in the field.
Why McIlroy is among favourites
The two-time PGA Player of the Year has won two of the last three professional tournaments he has competed in.
In October 2022, McIlroy successfully defended the CJ Cup at Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina and the victory also saw him move to number one in the OWGR, overtaking Scottie Scheffler.
The two-time PGA Tour leading money winner then started off the year (2023) by winning the Hero Dubai Desert Classic as he sent a strong message to his rivals.
Quotes
“I'm going to enjoy this. This is probably sweeter than it should be, or needs to be," McIlroy said after winning the Hero Dubai Desert Classic late last month.
“Mentally today was probably one of the toughest rounds I've ever had to play. Because it would be really easy to let your emotions get in the way.
“I just had to really concentrate on focusing on myself; forget who was up there on the leaderboard. And I did that really, really well. I feel like I showed a lot of mental strength out there today.”
