The
MTN Zambia Super League is currently taking a break and is set to resume on the 17
th of February. This break began in early January, just before the start of the AFCON tournament, because Zambia had qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
During this break, clubs have been busy with training sessions and have also been active in the January transfer window, where they can buy and sell players to strengthen their teams. The league is expected to resume on the 17th of February, with clubs making preparations to compete for the remainder of the season.
In the January 2024 transfer window, several players have left and joined different clubs. One notable departure is Freddy Michaels, the Ivorian striker who played for Green Eagles Football Club. He has been bought by the Tanzanian club Simba Sporting Club. Freddy was a top performer in the MTN Super League, scoring 14 goals and leading the league's scoring charts. Additionally, ZESCO United has seen the departure of Kelvin Mubanga Kapamba, who has joined Al Nasser in Libya on a permanent deal.
On the other hand, some notable players have joined the MTN Super League during this transfer window. Moses Phiri has joined Power Dynamos from Simba Sporting Club on loan until the end of the season. Also, defender Kabaso Chongo has joined Kabwe Warriors after parting ways with TP Mazembe.
During the recess, several clubs have conducted mid-season camps to fine-tune their strategies. Zanaco held a seven-day camp in Chipata, where they played two friendly matches. ZESCO United spent five days in Ndola for their camp, while Nkana FC and Green Eagles also had their respective camps in Mufulira and Lusaka.
Currently, at week 20 of the league, ZESCO United FC is leading the standings with 39 points. Following closely behind are Red Arrows with 38 points in second place, defending champions Power Dynamos in third with 33 points, and Green Eagles in fourth with 32 points.
