2022/23 English Premier League

Matchday 20

Brighton & Hove Albion v Liverpool

American Express Community Stadium
Brighton, England
Saturday, 14 January 2023
Kick-off is at 17h00

Liverpool will be determined to get back on the winning trail when they take on Brighton at the Amex on Saturday, January 14.

The Reds struggled during the first four months of the season following the departure of Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich, losing four of their opening 14 games.

However, Jurgen Klopp's side managed to steady the ship somewhat in the final two months of 2022, winning four on the spin to climb up to sixth position.

The Merseysiders were humbled on Monday though, after going down 3-1 at Brentford to fall further behind in the title race, with the gap to league leaders Arsenal now standing at 16 points.

Klopp made three changes at half-time in a bid to overturn a 2-0 deficit to the Bees and he admits the only way forward is to keep recording victories, which will restore confidence amongst his players.

"So we can change our position only by winning football games and tonight is obviously the opposite, so we didn't gain any points, cannot take anything from it," the German said in his post-match press conference.

"How I said, we have to win football games and that we have a lot of players not available in the moment, you can see that in changes and when we change it's now not that we can just throw in offensive players and stuff like this to give somebody a rest or say, 'OK, come on, you did enough for today.'

"So they all pretty much have to fight through. That's the situation and nothing else."

The Seagulls have yet to fully click under Roberto De Zerbi, who failed to win his first five games at the helm since replacing Graham Potter in September.

A 4-1 triumph over Everton on Tuesday went a long to boosting morale in the team after they suffered a 4-2 defeat against Arsenal on New Year's Eve, with the three points gained at Goodison Park lifting them up to eighth position.

De Zerbi insists there's still plenty of room for improvement despite registering his fourth win, admitting the scoreline wasn't a true reflection of their performance.

"I'm happy for the result for sure, but I am honest. We have a lot of space to improve," he declared. "I'm very happy, but I'm not a journalist, I'm a coach and I have to analyse the performance, not only the result.

"The result is too easy. Against Arsenal we lost the game, and we played bad? No, it's not true. Today, we won 4-1, is it a fantastic game? No. I have to be honest and to be clear with my players."
