2020 Summer Olympic Games
23 July – 8 August 2021
Tokyo, Japan
Novak Djokovic will continue his pursuit of a Gold Medal as the Men’s Singles Tennis tournament reaches a thrilling conclusion in the coming days at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games. The Men’s Singles tournament will see the Bronze and Gold Medal matches held on Saturday 31 July and Sunday 1 August respectively.
Djokovic has thus far defeated Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien, Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany and Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to move into the final eight. The Serbian is chasing a second Olympic Medal after winning Bronze in Beijing 2008, while victory in Tokyo would continue a brilliant 2021 which has already seen him win the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon.
In fact, Gold in these Games would secure the fourth of five titles Djokovic would need to secure an unprecedented men’s singles ‘Golden Slam’, which is winning all four major tournaments plus the Olympic title. It has been done in women’s singles tennis, with Steffi Graf achieving the feat in 1988.

“It's still a very long way from potential achievement, historic achievement," said Djokovic. "I am privileged and motivated to be in this position ... let's talk about history if everything goes great here after I finish with the tournament.”
Adding to Djokovic’s ambition is the fact that his two main rivals – Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal – decided against competing at Tokyo 2020. “I have not experienced too many big tournaments in the past 15 years without Roger and Rafa playing," he said. "So it's a little bit strange, to be honest. ... But still, you know, some of the best players in the world are here.”

Djokovic, whose main threats for the Gold medal will come from the likes of Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev, has been open about the fact that he was initially hesitant to come to these Games because strict coronavirus protocols mean that fans will not be in the stands.
"It's different, but it's still the Olympic Games. I was in a dilemma for a little bit, but ultimately I decided to come," he explained. "And I'm glad because, you know, for me there are many more things that are beautiful about the Olympic Games.”
