Daniel Ricciardo will return to the scene of perhaps the high point of his Formula 1 career when Round 6 of the 2019 season is held in Monaco on Sunday 26 May.
The Australian put in a brilliant drive to win last year’s Monaco Grand Prix while still racing for Red Bull, shrugging off a major technical issue which robbed him of 25 percent of his power and two of his eight gears.
This year he can only dream of being that high up the grid, with his current team Renault struggling to find pace (they are down in eighth place in the Constructors’ Championship, with only Toro Rosso and Williams behind them).
By contrast, McLaren have been the most improved from 2018 to 2019, with Carlos Sainz’s eighth-place finish at the Spanish GP lifting them into fourth place behind the ‘big three’ of Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.
The British outfit also have a remarkable record at Monaco, claiming 15 wins – a mark unequalled by any other team in F1 history. However, their most recent triumph on the streets of the principality was back in 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was en-route to his first Drivers’ Championship title.
Other midfield drivers to watch include Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen, who won the Monaco GP 14 years ago in 2005, as well as Haas’ Kevin Magnussen, who is currently seventh on the standings and showed his aggressive streak at the last race in Barcelona.
