What to know about the tournament
Established in 1927, the world-renowned competition is contested every two years with the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe.

The 2023 event will be the 44th edition and each team consists of 12 players - six automatic qualifiers and six Captain’s picks.
Team US
The United States are the defending champions having regained the Ryder Cup in 2021 with a record 19–9 victory having fielded its youngest team in its history.
Team US captain Zach Johnson has confirmed Sam Burns, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas as Captain’s Picks.
They will join automatic qualifiers Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman, Max Homa and Xander Schauffele.

How it works
The three days of the matches consist of 28 total matches, each of which is worth one point. There are no extra holes in Ryder Cup matches. Should the two sides be tied after 18 holes, each side earns a half point.
To win the Ryder Cup outright, a team must collect 14 ½ of the 28 points available. In the case of a 14-14 tie, the winning team from the previous Ryder Cup retains the trophy.
Quotes
"Golf can be quite an insular sport at the pro level, so these guys love coming together every two years and playing a team sport," Guy Kinnings, the Deputy CEO for Ryder Cup, told Lux Mag.
"We also create an unbelievable atmosphere on the first tee. It’s a real amphitheatre and the players all say it’s the most nervous they ever feel. Rome 2023 promises to be particularly special as the location is so iconic.
"You can actually see St Peter’s Basilica from various spots on the course, so spectators can enjoy one of the world’s great cities when not watching golf. There’s a lot to get ready in time for September, so it’s going to be a very full on six months."
