Wednesday’s action in the
UEFA Champions League will see the defending champions of the past three seasons, Real Madrid, take on the mighty Ajax Amsterdam as they begin their passage through the knockout phase of the tournament with their sights firmly set on a place in the showpiece final, set to be staged at Atletico Madrid’s new Wanda Metropolitano home in June.
Elsewhere in Europe’s premier club competition though attention turns to Borussia Dortmund’s trip to take on Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley – the venue where Die Schwarzgelben heart-breakingly lost the final to bitter rivals Bayern Munich back in 2013.

Spurs were made to work hard for their 2-1 win over Leicester City in the English Premier League this past weekend and had Hugo Lloris to thank as his second-half penalty save helped secure all three points for the home side. Dortmund have enjoyed had a wonderous campaign thus far. They currently sit five points clear of Bayern Munich at the summit of the Bundesliga table having suffered just one defeat domestically since August. Tomas Tuchel’s side are without a win in their last three however after they squandered a 3-0 lead against Hoffenheim on Saturday, eventually drawing 3-3. That result culminated a week that saw Die Borussen dumped out of the DFB Cup on penalties by Werder Bremen.

The duo have faced off a total of four times in the past three years – first coming up against each other at this stage in the UEFA Europa League in 2013, which Dortmund came away 5-1 winners on aggregate, before being drawn together in the group stage of the Champions League a year later.
Spurs ‘did the double’ over Dortmund in 2017, winning the pair of matches between them. The last encounter ended 2-1 to the visitors Spurs at Signal Iduna Park in with Harry Kane scoring his third goal in three appearances against the Germans, adding to the brace he bagged in Spurs’ last home game against Dortmund, coincidentally which was also played at their temporary Wembley home as they await the opening of their grand new stadium.
