2019-20 Premier League
25-28 June 2020
Selected matches, rounds 31 and 32
Watford and Southampton will meet for a key Sunday clash in the
Premier League when they meet at Vicarage Road on 28 June 2020. The match is one of five spread from Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 June, as the English continues its return from a three-month pandemic-enforced absence.
Watford will come into the match on the back of a clash away to Burnley on Thursday evening, with Nigel Pearson and his charges hoping to keep up their fight to remain above the relegation zone.
“It’s different of course, if you don’t feel the warmth of the fans and the crowd, for us it’s completely different,” said Hornets defender Adam Masina of playing behind closed doors. “I know it’s a very hard moment for everybody and I have a massive amount of respect for everybody in this situation. For us, we have to play in another atmosphere and it’s strange. You can hear the coach and each other better, we know it’s different and we have to deal with it.”

Southampton will also have been in action on Thursday, playing at home to a wounded Arsenal and hoping to secure a result which will guarantee a place in the Premier League for the 2020-21 campaign.
“It was good fun, it was great to be back. It’s been a long time due to what’s been going on worldwide, which is understandable,” said Saints striker Danny Ings, after scoring in a 3-0 win against Norwich last weekend. “To be back out here was great and hopefully we brought joy to the nation as well.”
In head-to-head stats, Watford and Southampton have met in 84 matches across all competitions. The Saints have claimed 36 wins compared to 26 for the Hornets, while 22 games have been drawn.
When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, Southampton claimed a 2-1 home win at St Mary’s Stadium in November 2019 thanks to goals from Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse.
