Zambia are expected to make their fourteenth appearance at the Olympic Games having marked their official debut in 1964 under the name Northern Rhodesia.
We take a closer look at some of Zambia's leading medal contenders:
Everisto Mulenga (boxing)
The 22-year-old boxer won a bronze medal at the 2019 African Games and later qualified for the Tokyo Olympics by winning the African Qualification Tournament, both at featherweight.
Mulenga reached the quarterfinals of the bantamweight event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where he won his first bout before suffering a loss to Mohammad Hussamuddin.
The 2016 African Region V Youth U20 Games silver medalist will be keen to become the second Zambian boxer to a medal at the Olympic Games after Keith Mwila.
Sydney Siame (athletics)
The 23-year-old starlet is among the fastest men in Africa having announced himself to the world when he won a gold medal in the 200 meters at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in China.
Siame, who is Zambia's national 100m and 200m record holder, became the first Zambian to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games after he clinched gold in the 200 meters at the All African Games in 2019.
The promising sprinter was awarded Best Male Athlete of the 2019 African Games and he will be keen to emulate his compatriot Samuel Mutete, who won silver in the 400 hurdles at the 1996 Olympics in the USA.
Siame has disclosed that he often communicates with athletics icon legend Usain Bolt, who is a world record holder in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4x100 metres relay.
“I still chat with him through email, and we talk also. When I ran the 100m in 9.88 seconds," Siame said.
"He sent a message to congratulate me. He is a good man and he believes in me. He’s like my big brother.
“We have just accepted it. I have continued my journey to Tokyo, preparing locally and trying to compete locally. It has been difficult but I have tried my level best and I’m looking forward for Tokyo.”

Steven Mung’andu (judo)
The Zambian star is among the 29 African athletes from 24 countries that will compete in the Judo tournament in Tokyo having made the cut after competing in various qualifiers.
Mung’andu won a bronze medal at the 41st African Senior Judo Championship last year as he finished behind Abdelmawgoud Mohamed and Abelrahman Ahmed in the 66-kilogram category.
The experienced Judoka, who won silver at the 2020 Dakar African Open which attracted almost fifty judokas from Africa countries, France and Uruguay, will be hoping to scoop a medal in Japan.
