Who’s coming in, who’s leaving? EPL’s promotions and relegations for the 22/23 season

After a tense relegation battle last season, three spots are open, which means three new promoted sides from the Championship will be coming back to the English Premier League, getting to showcase their particular brand of English football. Always making for an interesting dynamic, the new pool of talent will need to adapt to the unforgiving series of fixtures, with even the huge juggernauts at the top unrelenting and desperate for points in the most competitive league.

EPL’s brand new promoted teams
These teams battled it out in the Championship to take top honours and secure their spot in the English Premier League once more, a promotion that’s worth about £170 million in future revenue:

  • Fulham
After being invigorated with the arrival of esteemed manager Marco Silva, the Cottagers steamed their way through a 23-game unbeaten run, with star player, Aleksandar Mitrović, setting a new top goal scorer record of 43 goals in 46 games in a Championship season. Not new to Premier League football, Fulham fans will hope that the Serbian striker’s intimidating form will continue into the new season. Other players to watch are Tim Ream, Tosin Adarabioyo and Harrison Reed, as well as promising youngster Fábio Carvalho, who made such an impact, he scored a transfer to Liverpool.

  • Bournemouth
The Cherries are finally back, after two years in the Championship and coming so close to promotion in 2021 when they narrowly missed out to Brentford. Appointing the Fulham manager Scotty Parker just days after being sacked was an interesting strategy, however, they managed to gain two points off of both games against the Cottagers, and sailed to an automatic promotion spot just six points behind Fulham in the final table. Keep an eye on Dominic Solanke, number two top scorer for the season with 29 Championship gaols, the Jefferson Lerma and Philip Billing midfielder partnership, and defender Mark Travers, who kept an impressive 20 clean sheets.

  • Nottingham Forest
Getting promoted and ending their 23-year absence from the English Premier League was not an easy ride for Forest, who had to battle through the playoffs after Fulham and Bournemouth secured the only two guaranteed promotion spots at the top of the table. The journey started messily, yielding only one point from their first seven league games, after which manager Chris Hughton was sacked and replaced with Steve Cooper, who turned it all around for them. Forest narrowly made it through the playoff games, the first one going to a penalty shootout against Sheffield United, and the second being won by a single disastrous Terriers own-goal in the first half, clinching the win in the most lucrative game in football. Now older fans of the club will see Nottingham Forest playing in the top tier again; the team is, unbelievably to some, a club that has won the European Cup (older version of Champions League) twice in its history and was a regular Premier League team in the ‘90s. Key players that helped Nottingham Forest to promotion include loan players James Garner, who will be playing for Man United this season, Olympiacos winger Philip Zinckernagel, and right-back Djed Spence who has joined Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Welsh Forest player Brennan Johnson.

[H2] Who’s been relegated to the Championship?
The end of the 2021/22 season saw a fierce and desperate relegation scuffle amongst several clubs, but ultimately these three could not make the cut:

  • Burnley
At the top of the bottom, Burnley’s fate was secured on the very final matchday of the season. Going in level on points with Leeds United, and the favourites to stay in the Premier League, the Clarets finished with a heart-breaking 2-1 loss at home to Newcastle, while Leeds scraped by with a 2-1 away win to Brentford. Everton was also in the mix, and incredibly close to getting chopped, only securing their stay in the Premier League in the penultimate match of the season with an exuberant 3-2 comeback win over Crystal Palace. At least Burnley’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope, will get to stay in the top-tier after his transfer to Newcastle.

  • Watford
After finishing second in the Championship and getting promoted back to the Premier League for the 2021/22 campaign, it quickly became a season to forget as the Hornets earned a relegation spot early. A poor start led to manager Xisco’s sacking and being replaced by experienced Claudio Ranieri. Despite surprise wins against Everton and Man United, the latter of which led to Solskjaer’s dismissal, as well as Emmanuel Dennis bursting onto the scene and scoring 10 goals and racking up six assists, Ranieri could not make magic happen, with one point earned in eight games, and became the second manager to be sacked. Roy Hodgson became his replacement, but could not turn things around, ultimately racking up a mere eight points in their final 18 league games.

  • Norwich City
The Canaries cemented relegation a week before Watford, with a disastrous season that ultimately saw them earn 22 points in total. Daniel Farke had a catastrophic start, with only 2 points gained in their first 10 league games, eventually being sacked, with Dean Smith taking over the position to try and turn things around. Unfortunately this was far from the case and Norwich confirmed relegation status six matchweeks before the end of the season.

As ever, the Wheel of Fortune continues spinning and we’ll get to watch the next entertaining season of football which will no doubt be filled with thrilling comebacks and heart-breaking disappointments, but such is the nature of the most competitive league in football.
