Cameron Smith will be hoping to become the first golfer to win back-to-back
Open Championships since Pádraig Harrington clinched it in 2007 and 2008.
What to know about Smith
The Australian star is one of the top golfers in the world and he is currently placed seventh on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and his best overall ranking is second.
Smith clinched the 2022 Open Championship and has won five other tournaments on the PGA Tour, including the 2022 Players Championship.
News
The 29-year-old is part of LIV Golf and will be making his return to the PGA Tour event having competed in last month's 2023 US Open where he was one of the standout performers.
Smith finished fourth behind Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Wyndham Clark who won the tournament after securing a one-shot victory.
Why Smith is among the favourites
The Brisban-born golfer is coming into the 2023 Open Championship having finished in the top 10 in the last two golf majors including the 2023 Masters Tournament where he finished ninth.
A masterful final round of 64 earned Smith glory in The 150th Open at St Andrews 12 months ago, the 2022 PGA Tour Rookie of the Season will now be keen to replicate the same form in Merseyside.
Quotes
“Sunday was a windy day but I got out to play 1 through 5 and then 14 through 18,” Smith said ahead of the 2023 Open Championship.
“It’s a great venue, it was playing very strong yesterday because of the wind, which we will have to deal with all week. It’s a great test out there.
“I never expect too much of myself but there’s definitely something on the inside that wants to win two, three, four majors - however many I can," he added.
“But I try not to let that get in the way. I’m just going to go out and give my all.”
