David Gaudu is perhaps France's best hope of becoming their first La Grande Boucle champion since Bernard Hinault won the title for a fifth time in 1985.
The Groupama–FDJ rider will be targeting a podium finish this year after securing fourth place at the
2022 Tour de France, his best performance in five attempts.
Gaudu had a solid start to the season, with his showing at Paris-Nice in March the most impressive after he finished ahead of defending Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard in second place.
The Frenchman also came in second at the Ardeche Classic, fourth at the Drome Classic and Itzulia Basque Country, and seventh at the Tour du Var, although he was well off the pace at the Criterium du Dauphine.

Gaudu is hoping to give Groupama–FDJ team-mate Thibaut Pinot a good send-off in what will be his compatriot's 10th and final Tour outing as they aim to go one better than last year.
"We have a great team again and I'm very pleased to be able to ride alongside Thibaut in his last-ever Tour participation, after everything he taught me about this race over the years," the 26-year-old said.
"Last year we got fourth overall and this year the objective is to progress. We'll try and step up a spot, which is perhaps one of the hardest things to do. But we're all ready to take on this challenge."
