2022/23 UEFA Nations League

League A - Group 3
Matchday 2

Germany v England

Allianz Arena
Munich, Germany
Tuesday, 7 June 2022
Kick-off is at 21h45

Germany and England are set to renew hostilities when they clash on matchday 2 in the UEFA Nations League at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, June 7.

Die Mannschaft have long been the bane of the Three Lions in major international tournaments, having knocked them out of the 1970 World Cup, the 1972 Euro Championship, the 1990 World Cup, the 1996 European Championship and the 2010 World Cup.

England's victories have been few and far between since beating the Germans in 1966 to lift the World Cup on home soil and they finally took revenge on their nemesis at the 2020 European Championship.

Hansi Flick's side drew 1-1 with Italy on matchday 1 to extend their unbeaten run to 10 matches, with eight of those ending in victory.

Flick felt his players committed too many errors against the Azzurri, but was pleased with their performance after Joshua Kimmich cancelled out Lorenzo Pellegrini's opener in Bologna.

"We certainly can't be completely satisfied. It was okay in the first quarter of an hour, but after that we didn't find the spaces, made a lot of mistakes and let ourselves get a bit out of control.

"After the 0-1 - and that's the positive thing - the team came back and then also tried to go for the 2-1. We'll analyze the game and try to do better on Tuesday against England."

Gareth Southgate's team saw a nine-match undefeated streak come to an end with a 1-0 loss to Hungary on Saturday.

The Three Lions hadn't lost since falling to the Italians on penalties in the 2020 European Championship final, but a 66th-minute spot-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai in Budapest halted that run.

Southgate pointed to the heat in the Hungarian capital as a key factor to their defeat, but also suggested his players were rusty after not playing together much this year.

"I think we knew it was going to be a very difficult game. We've had difficult games with them, with Hungary, as other big nations have had. They're very difficult to break down," he said.

"We probably lacked a half-yard I would say, in terms of our real incisiveness. I think that was more the heat than the length of the season. The other factor is, we haven't played together for three months and we have had three games in six months."

Head-to-Head record:

Matches - 33
Germany - 15
England - 14
Draws - 4
