2023 Formula One World Championship
2023 Spanish Grand Prix
Round 7
Spain Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
Montmeló, Barcelona
Sunday, 4 June 2023
Max Verstappen will be determined to retain his
Spanish Grand Prix title and keep his defence of the Formula One world championship on track.
Most recent race
The Red Bull Racing-RBPT driver won the Monaco Grand Prix on May 28 and he looked unstoppable on the Circuit de Monaco.
For most of the race, Verstappen, who had started on grid one, coasted on a dry and narrow track where overtaking is the hardest in Formula One.
Formula One title ambitions
The 25-year-old is placed at the top of the World Drivers' Championship standings having accumulated 144 points from six races.
Verstappen is 39 points clear of second-placed Sergio Perez as the two Red Bull Racing-RBPT drivers battle for the world championship.
Why Verstappen could win the 2023 Spanish MotoGP
The Hasselt-born star will be brimming with confidence when he competes in the Circuit de Catalunya where he won last year's Spanish Grand Pix.
Having won four consecutive races, Verstappen is the clear favourite to win the race and extend his lead at the top of the World Drivers' Championship standings.
What did he say?
"First of all because of the chance of rain we couldn't do the strategy we wanted to do, we had to stay out almost double the amount of laps we'd have liked on the medium," Verstappen said after the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix.
"That was a big challenge because I had to go through that graining phase and then the tyres started to pick up again. That's what I really needed as we planned for like 30 laps and I did 55.
"It was not the easiest and also balance from left to right was very different. Then it started to rain and on very worn tyres it was very difficult, I clipped a few barriers - I just had no grip. Even on the intermediates it was super slippery and it took a few laps to feel comfortable."
