2019 Formula 1 World Championship
Round 5, Spanish Grand Prix
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
12 May 2019
Formula 1’s midfield battle will heat up when Round 5 of the 2019 season, the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, is staged on Sunday 12 May.
Racing Point’s Sergio Perez is the leading candidate from the midfield teams in the Drivers’ Championship, with his six-place finish in Azerbaijan taking him up to sixth on the log – level even with Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly and Alfa Romeo veteran Kimi Raikkonen.
Next best is McLaren’s Lando Norris, with the rookie claiming two points-scoring finishes compared to the one of his more experienced teammate Carlos Sainz Jr.
Yet it is the struggles of Renault and their drivers, Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg, which is the real surprise of the midfield battle thus far. The pair were expected to be the ‘best of the rest’ behind the six drivers for Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull, but it simply hasn’t panned out that way for the French manufacturer.
Pressure will also be growing on Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat, who has been thoroughly outperformed by his rookie teammate Alexander Albon, while Haas also need a strong showing to regain confidence – especially Romain Grosjean, who has yet to register a point this season and has retired from three of the four races.
