Cup In Qatar – Zambia

Africa is strongly represented in the World Cup, even with the notable absence of some of the biggest nations. Despite some glorious efforts by African teams in the past, the continent's recent record at the tournament has needed an improvement. Will we finally see an African team make the Semi-Finals?

African countries represented at the Cup In Qatar

  • Ghana
  • Morocco
  • Senegal
  • Tunisia
  • Cameroon

There's no shortage of top-end talent in all the five countries who qualified, Ghana returns to the World Cup after missing out on the 2018 tournament in Russia, and will be hoping to turn things around on the biggest sport stage in the world.

Top of the class after the international break, Morocco were one of only two teams to have gone unbeaten, and the only side of the five to have improved on their previous international performances this year. Morocco look the most dangerous and cohesive of Africa's teams, as they did before Russia 2018.

Senegal were the other African team to go unbeaten this window, following up a routine victory against Bolivia with a respectful 1-1 draw with Iran. The current African champions with Sadio Mané’s impact, remain well placed to advance from Group A.

Tunisia is traditionally known for troubling stronger sides, and they will certainly need to maintain composure with everything to play for.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will make their eighth appearance at the World Cup - a record number of appearances for an African nation. They will be hoping to turn things around, 32 years after shocking Argentina at the 1990 competition.

Will any of the African teams reach the Semi-Finals?

In reaching the quarter-finals in the 1990 World Cup, Cameroon set a benchmark that has not been bettered yet. Senegal and Ghana also reached the last-eight, in 2002 and 2010 respectively. World Cup tournament experience will not be in short supply, and neither will be star power and potential upsets.
