Four things to look out for in the Champions League

The Champions League is undoubtedly the most prestigious and coveted trophy in European club football and every season, each of the 32 teams set out to go as far as possible in the competition, in an attempt to write their names in Champions League folklore.

Who are the underdogs and favourites? Will title holders Chelsea be dethroned? Will we see a rising star come out of the shadows and into cup glory?

We take a look at five things to watch out for in this season’s UEFA Champions League season.

New adventures for Messi and Ronaldo

Arguably the two best players of this era, and possibly of all time, have embarked on new journeys in their careers, with Cristiano Ronaldo reuniting with Manchester United while Lionel Messi joining forces with Neymar and Mbappe in Paris.

Cristiano Ronaldo made a somewhat shock return to Old Trafford following rumours that strongly linked him with noisy neighbours Manchester City. Ronaldo won the Champions League with the Red Devils, however the English giants have struggled to reach those heights since his departure. Can he inspire Man United to relive past glory to claim a fourth European title?

After spending his entire career at Barcelona, Lionel Messi has sought a fresh start at Paris Saint-Germain joining forces with Neymar and Mbappe as well as other big summer signings such as Sergio Ramos and Gianluigi Donnarumma from AC Milan. Despite PSG’s wealth, they are still looking for that first elusive Champions League title. Can Messi lead them to the promised land?

Chelsea looks to defend their title

There has only been one repeat winner in the modern era of the Champions League, which saw Real Madrid win a three-peat from 2016-2018. Chelsea will look to win back-to-back titles under Thomas Tuchel, who won the prestigious cup after only taking charge of Chelsea for six months.

Since coming in, the German tactician has solidified Chelsea’s defense, making them hard to beat and giving the side serious championship credentials.

Surprise package

If you’re looking to bet on a dark horse who can go all the way to the final, Atalanta could be the team you’re looking for. With a fearless attack-minded style of play, the Italian side has established itself as a real force to be reckoned with.

From a modest and humble club to finishing third in the last three Serie A seasons, Atalanta is a serious competitor that is sure to make waves this season.

The group of death

Of the eight groups in the first round, group B seems to be the group with the most powerhouses, featuring Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, FC Porto and AC Milan. Atletico Madrid are defending Spanish league champions while Porto should not be taken lightly. AC Milan looks like a rejuvenated side while Liverpool will look to make amends for their early exit in last season’s competition.
