EPL - Five most memorable moments of the Premier League season

The 2022-23 Premier League season was remarkable for the fact that Arsenal topped the standings for a staggering 248 days and yet they still failed to win the title after crumbling in the run-in to open the door for Manchester City to lift the trophy for the third year running.

There were plenty of moments that will live long in the memory and we take a look at five of the most memorable ones.

Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham (14 August 2022)

The matchday 2 encounter at Stamford Bridge was an entertaining affair as Tottenham twice came from behind to rescue a 2-2 draw. It was a battle of wits between Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte as both managers changed their system during the game in a bid to gain the upper hand. Kalidou Koulibaly gave the Blues a 19th-minute lead before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg hit back for Spurs on 68 minutes, but parity lasted just nine minutes as Reece James put Tuchel's side back in front. Harry Kane would have the final say though, when he struck in the 96th minute to clinch a dramatic point. However, the match will be remembered for the spat between Tuchel and Conte, who clashed after the final whistle following a fiery handshake, which led to red cards for both men.

That Ronaldo interview

Cristiano Ronaldo desperately tried to leave Manchester United during the summer transfer window after becoming increasingly unhappy with the direction the club had been taking both on and off the field in recent years. The Portuguese superstar failed to secure a transfer and found himself on the bench at the start of the season as Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were Erik ten Hag's preferred pairing up front. Just 10 days after scoring the 700th goal of his club career as a substitute in the 2-1 win over Everton on October 9, Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel before the final whistle following his refusal to come off the bench in the 2-0 victory against Tottenham. The veteran striker was dropped from the first team as punishment, although he returned to skipper United in the 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa on November 6. However, Ronaldo gave an explosive interview with Piers Morgan during the World Cup break in which he criticised Ten Hag and United's owners, the Glaziers, spelling the end of his career at Old Trafford.

Kane sets new Spurs record

Harry Kane made history when he scored the winner against Manchester City on February 5 to became Tottenham's all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing the tally of 266 set by the legendary Jimmy Greaves. The England striker had already broken Sergio Aguero's record for the most Premier League goals at a single club when he bagged the winner against Wolves on August 20 to register his 185th for Spurs. Kane ended the campaign on 30 goals, although it wasn't enough to win the Golden Boot, which went to City ace Erling Haaland (36), but he did set another record as the first player to score 30 times in two separate 38-game Premier League seasons.

Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United (5 March 2023)

It wasn't even Liverpool's biggest win of the campaign, but it was notable for other reasons. Jurgen Klopp's side had been struggling for consistency all season, losing seven times in the league prior to the visit of the Red Devils, who were building up a head of steam under Ten Hag in recent weeks following the 3-2 loss to Arsenal on January 22. United were tipped to come out on top once again after winning 2-1 in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford on August 22, but they capitulated in the second half, conceding six goals after Cody Gakpo had opened the scoring on 43 minutes. Gakpo scored his second of the game on 50 minutes, while Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez also bagged braces, with Roberto Firmino completing the rout two minutes from time.

Southampton 3-3 Tottenham (18 March 2023)

Tottenham were still in contention for a top-four finish in March as they battled it out with Newcastle and Manchester United in the race for UEFA Champions League football. However, Spurs twice squandered the lead against rock-bottom Southampton at St Mary's, where James Ward-Prowse scored a 93rd-minute penalty to earn a 3-3 draw. Antonio Conte went on a rant in his post-match press conference as he laid into his players for being "selfish" and not showing enough "spirit" or "responsibility" despite being paid large sums of money to perform for the club. The Italian also criticised Spurs chairman Daniel Levy for a lack of ambition after overseeing a 22-year tenure without silverware. Conte left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by mutual consent eight days later with the team sitting fourth in the table.
