Tokyo, Japan

The men's 4x100m relay is set to light up the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but predicting a winner is proving very difficult.

Heading into the Games, the United States of America were clear favourites to win gold in this event but Trayvon Bromell's struggles has opened the door slightly for the chasing pack.

That said, America is still expected to be too strong for their rivals. Bromell still holds the fastest time of the year despite his failure to make the men's 100m final in Japan, both Fred Kerley (2nd & silver) and fellow countryman Ronnie Baker (fifth) did and have shown some form in Japan.

They also have 200m specialist Noah Lyles, who was part of the American team that won gold at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, to call upon.

Zharnel Hughes will be another eager to right the wrongs of the 100m final. The Great Britain athlete was disqualified for a false start, but will have a shot at redemption in the relay. He was part of the quartet that set the fastest time of the year in Gateshead just last month.

South Africa are the current world relays champions following their victory in Poland in May but will be without Gift Leotlela who picked up a hamstring injury in the 100m semifinals.

As a result, South Africa will lean heavily on Akani Simbine who finished fourth in the final.

“The better man won on the day. I am disappointed in myself. I made the final. No, the false start did not affect my performance. You have to reset and get going,” said a visibly disappointed Simbine on Sunday.

Jamaica are clear favourites to win the women's 4x100m relay having won gold, silver and bronze in the 100m final over the weekend.

The women's and men's heats will commence on Thursday with the final to close off Friday's action in Tokyo.
