The Zambia Women’s National Team, known as the Copper Queens, secured their spot in the 2024 Women’s
Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with an impressive 12-0 aggregate victory over Angola. The second leg, held at Ndola's Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on 5
th December, saw a dominant performance from Zambia.
Rachel Kundananji opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a powerful header, setting the tone for Zambia's commanding lead.
Captain Barbra Banda, orchestrated by Rachel Nachucla in the fourteenth minute, doubled the advantage. By halftime, the Copper Queens had established an 8-0 lead on goal aggregate.
Coach Bruce Mwape made a strategic halftime substitution, bringing in Avell Chitundu for Rachel Nachula. The second half commenced with a thunderous strike from Sudan Banda, extending Zambia's lead.
Avell Chitundu further widened the gap in the 71st minute, capitalizing on a loose ball in the box.
In the 76th minute, Esther Banda received a sublime pass from Captain Barbra Banda, securing the fifth goal for Zambia.
Rachel Kundananji showcased her prowess by netting her second goal in the 87th minute, assisted by Fridah Kabwe, culminating in a resounding 6-0 victory and a 12-0 aggregate score.
This triumph secured the Copper Queens' qualification for WAFCON 2024, marking their third consecutive appearance in the prestigious tournament. Notably, in 2022, they finished atop their group undefeated and clinched bronze by securing a third-place finish.
The list of twelve qualified teams for WAFCON 2024 includes Morocco (the host country), South Africa, Algeria, Botswana, Ghana, Mali, DR Congo, Senegal, Tanzania, Tunisia, Zambia, and Nigeria. As the stage is set for the tournament in Morocco next year, anticipation builds for the exciting spectacle that WAFCON 2024 promises to be.
