2023/24 English Premier League
Matchday 22
Tottenham Hotspur v Brentford

London, England

Kick-off is at 21h30 CAT

Tottenham will attempt to arrest a four-game winless run to Brentford when they go head to head in a London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday, January 30.

Spurs triumphed 2-0 in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs in the Premier League at the same venue on 2 December 2021, but have failed to get the better of the Bees since then.

Thomas Frank's side ran out 3-1 victors in the corresponding fixture last season and drew 2-2 at the Gtech Community Stadium on August 13 - their third stalemate in four encounters.

The Lilywhites sit three points outside the top four in fifth place after they came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Manchester United at Old Trafford on January 14.

Aston Villa dropped to fourth place after being held to a goalless draw by Everton at Goodison Park, having seen Arsenal climb above them up to third with a 5-0 hammering of Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium on January 20.

The West Londoners halted a worrying five-game losing streak as they beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 in the capital on January 20 to leapfrog the Tricky Trees (16th) and Palace (15th) into 14th spot.

Brentford closed within two points of Fulham (13th) after their city neighbours lost 1-0 to Chelsea in a local derby at Stamford Bridge on January 13.

Richarlison appears to have found his scoring boots again after bagging six goals in his last six matches. The Brazilian glanced a corner into the bottom right corner of the net against United to register his seventh goal of the season and his form has conincided with an upturn in fortunes for Ange Postecoglou's side.

Ivan Toney made a goalscoring return for the Bees when he curled a free-kick home in the 19th minute to equalise against Forest. It was the striker's first appearance of the season after he had served an eight-month ban for betting violations and Frank will be hoping he can inspire the team to climb back into the top half of the table.

Postecoglou praised his players for fighting back after Rasmus Hojlund had opened the scoring on three minutes and Marcus Rashford restored the Red Devils' lead in the 40th minute.

"We went a goal down pretty early and this group of players, every time we've had to deal with adversity, have just done it in an outstanding manner," he said.

"I couldn't be prouder of them. It was an outstanding effort and I thought some of our football was fantastic. I thought we were unlucky not to win the game. Irrespective of that, the performance and the effort the boys put in was first rate."

Toney ran over to Frank to embrace his manager after scoring against Forest and the Dane admitted he was pleased to see the striker with a smile on his face again.

"You always have a relationship with your players. For all the players in the squad, I just want the best for them," Frank said.

"Of course, Ivan is a big player and a big part of it, and of course we missed him. It was good to have him back, and I told him that. It was good to see him enjoying playing football."
