Group B

Comoros v Zambia

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

Gqeberha, South Africa

Kick-off is at 12h00

Zambia will be looking to keep their slim 2024 COSAFA Cup hopes alive when they take on Comoros at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Tuesday, July 2.

The Copper Bullets are staring at an early exit from the tournament as defending champions, having failed to pick up any points from their opening two matches in Group B.

Chisi Mbewe's side kicked off their campaign in South Africa with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Kenya on June 27 before going down to Zimbabwe by the same scoreline three days later.

Chipolopolo need to win big against the Coelacanths and hope that the Warriors thrash the Harambee Stars, with Mbewe admitting their task might be too great.

"I think it is not going to be easy. Comoros are also playing good football," he said. "We just need to ensure that we win the last game and make sure we walk out of the tournament with a win."

Comoros have yet to get the better of Zambia in five attempts and were beaten 2-1 in their most recent meeting in the group stages of the 2023 edition.

Ahamada Jambay's side are in a good position to qualify for the knockout stages for only the second time after they reached the quarter-finals in 2019.

The Indian Ocean islanders suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Zimbabwe first up but they bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Kenya on June 30 to move up to second place ahead of the Harambee Stars on goal difference.

Jambay admitted cutting out the mistakes they made against the Warriors was crucial to getting a positive result this time around, although he felt they could have won by a bigger margin.

"We were well prepared today but we must not be over-confident for our next match. We played against Zimbabwe and we committed some errors, and today we tried to avoid those errors," Jambay said via his interpreter.

"We were successful today but for sure we could have won 4 or 5-0. For the next match I think we will work on our defence, it's the most important thing for me."
