Remco Evenepoel has strengthened his grip on a podium finish heading into the final week of his first Tour de France

The Belgian has impressed on his debut, winning the first individual time trial on July 5 when he beat race leader Tadej Pogacar by 12 seconds.

Evenepoel then displayed his climbing capabilities with two successive third-placed finishes on the mountain stages of 14 and 15 behind Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard.

The 24-year-old took to the route from Loudenvielle to Plateau de Beille 3:30 ahead of Joao Almeida (4th) and extended that gap to 5:35 with six stages remaining.

Evenepoel also opened up a 6:08 lead over Carlos Rodriguez in the young rider classification and declared himself pleased with his performances in the Pyrenees.

"I tried to follow for a while and if Jonas dropped his pace, I could come back," the Soudal–Quick-Step rider told Sporza.

"But afterwards, I chose to go at my own pace and not risk going over the limit. It was only when Tadej attacked that the time gaps really opened up.

"It's all about keeping your feet on the ground and keeping working. I think I did well. Twice third in the Pyrenees - that's certainly not a bad result."
