The Zambia senior men’s national football team is set to take on Malawi this afternoon in the
Four Nations tournament, competing for the third and fourth positions.
In their previous match against Zimbabwe on Saturday, Zambia faced a tough challenge, ultimately losing 5-6 in a post-match penalty shootout. Despite Zambia's promising start with an early 2-0 lead, Zimbabwe fought back strongly. Captain Stopilla Sunzu scored a header in the 1st minute, followed by midfielder Clatous Chama's goal in the 19th minute.
However, Zimbabwe narrowed the gap with Marshal Munetsi's shot in the 24th minute and Bonny Miles's close-range tap-in just two minutes later, ending the first half with a 2-2 draw after Walter Musona's goal in the 43rd minute.
The second half saw both teams vigorously attacking, but no further goals were scored, leading to a penalty shootout. Zambia made a strategic decision to substitute goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga with Tosater Nsabata, known for his prowess in penalty situations. Nsabata made two crucial saves but also missed his spot, resulting in Zimbabwe securing a 6-5 victory in the shootout.
Now, Zambia gears up to face Malawi, who suffered a 4-0 defeat against Kenya, for the third-place position, while Zimbabwe and Kenya will vie for the tournament title in the final match.
This tournament serves as valuable preparation for all participating teams as they gear up for upcoming FIFA window matches in June.
The matches will take place today at the Bingu National Stadium, with Zambia facing Malawi in a 14:00 hours kick-off, followed by Zimbabwe taking on Kenya in the final at 17:00 hours.
