2021/22 English Premier League

Matchday 38

Chelsea v Watford

Stamford Bridge
London, England
Sunday, 22 May 2022
Kick-off is at 17h00

Chelsea will be looking to clinch third place in the Premier League when they welcome relegated Watford to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, May 22.

The Blues are two points clear of London rivals Tottenham ahead of their catch-up fixture against Leicester on Thursday, May 19.

Thomas Tuchel's side arrested a three-game winless run with a 3-0 victory over strugglers Leeds last week and they will be determined to finish the campaign on a high after losing to Liverpool in the FA Cup final this past weekend.

Tuchel remains optimistic that the west Londoners will challenge for silverware again next season after they also reached the EFL Cup final, which the Reds won on penalties as well.

"We reached consecutive domestic finals and we reached the FA Cup final last year but nobody can promise any victories. All we promise we can deliver is input, heart, passion and commitment, living up to the fullest and to have no regrets. This is what we do and we will not stop from doing it," the German said.

"We have everything it takes to win trophies and we proved it already. Someone was trying to convince me that we have had a trophyless season but we have a World Cup and a European Super Cup so I will take that for a trophyless season. I don't feel sorry just because it happened earlier in the season."

The Hornets have nothing to play for but pride after their relegation was confirmed with a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace earlier this month.

Roy Hodgson faced an uphill task of keeping the club up and ultimately failed, having lost 12 of his 17 matches at the helm. Former Forest Green Rovers manager Rob Edwards has been announced as his successor for next term.

Hodgson paid tribute to the club's fans for their backing throughout his short stint at Vicarage Road, which staged its final game in the top flight last Sunday when Leicester emerged 5-1 victors.

"I was really impressed with their support today. I have more than respect for the fans of Watford Football Club and I think they've been excellent throughout the season in staying with us, as they have done," he said.

"It doesn't matter if you're in the Premier League or National League South, as a fan you come to see your team win - it's as simple as that. And if you're going to lose a few games then you should try to do it away from home more often than at home, because you build all your hope around your home form and the tone it sets.

"I'm sure they'll give the new manager and coaching staff plenty of backing. They certainly are a 12th man because of their patience and understanding."
