Spanish clubs on back foot against English giants in UCL

Spanish clubs Real Madrid and Villarreal CF are on the back foot heading into their UEFA Champions League semi-final, second-leg matches.
 
Having lost 4-3 in the first-leg clash in England on April 26, Madrid are set to welcome English champions Manchester City at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 3.
 
Madrid will be keen to overturn the deficit in front of their passionate supporters and reach the Champions League final for a record-extending 17th time.
 
While City are determined to avoid a defeat in order to progress to the final of the world's biggest club tournament for the second time in this club's history.

The last time Madrid hosted City in the Champions League was on 26 February 2020.
 
Madrid suffered a 2-1 to City in a Round of 16 first-leg match which was played at the iconic Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
 
As a result, City progressed to the quarter-finals after winning the tie 4-2 on aggregate as the English side also won 2-1 at home in the second-leg encounter.
 
Meanwhile, Villarreal lost 2-0 to former English champions Liverpool FC in the first-leg match in England on May 4 and the two teams will now meet at the Estadio de la Cerámica on May 4. 
 
Villarreal will have to find a way to overturn the deficit and progress to the Champions League final for the first time in the club's history.

While Liverpool are looking to advance to the final of the prestigious competition for the 10th time by avoiding a defeat in Spain.
 
The last time Villarreal hosted Liverpool in a competitive match was on 28 April 2016. 
 
The Yellow Submarine claimed a 1-0 win over the Reds in the UEFA Europa League semi-final first-leg match which was played at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
 
However, it was Liverpool who advanced to the final after winning the tie 3-1 on aggregate with the English giants winning 3-0 in the second-leg game at home.
 
The two teams will now meet for the second time in the Champions League following this season's semi-final-final first-leg clash on April 27.
