Sergio Perez will be targeting a one-two finish for Red Bull Racing at the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, May 5 after just missing out on second place in Shanghai.

The Mexican has claimed four podium finishes in the opening five races to remain Max Verstappen's closest challenger in the drivers' standings, sitting 25 points behind his team-mate in second position.

Perez secured P2's in the Bahrain Grand Prix, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and the Japanese Grand Prix, but failed to capitalise on Verstappen's early retirement in the Australian Grand Prix as he lacked the pace to keep up with the Ferraris and McLarens, and had to settle for P5.

The 34-year-old driver started on the front row of the grid in the Chinese Grand Prix, only to be quickly overtaken by the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso and despite retaking second place, he lost track positions due to the Safety Car and eventually finished 5.387 seconds behind McLaren's Lando Norris in P3.

'Pecco' admitted he struggled for pace on the medium tyres especially and hopes the team will have a better understanding of the situation in Miami.

"Yeah, it really cost us quite a bit," Perez said, when asked if the strategy had affected his race. "Unfortunately [with the] Safety Car we lost two places.

"We did most of the race on the hard [tyre], once you're fighting like that in the early laps then the life of the tyres just goes off dramatically. At least we managed to get onto the podium, but it would have been good [to be] one and two.

"I think we were definitely lacking some pace, especially on the medium compound, we did struggle quite a bit with the balance.

'We changed a lot from yesterday (Saturday) to today (Sunday), so I think we didn't read the conditions as perfectly as we could, but overall I think it was a strong weekend and we understand the reasons why today the race pace was a little bit down."

2024 Chinese Grand Prix results:

Winner: Max Verstappen - Red Bull Racing
Second Place: Lando Norris - McLaren
Third Place: Sergio Perez - Red Bull Racing
