Zesco United Football Club has secured a spot in the
Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup competition. They achieved this milestone with one game remaining in the MTN Super League season. Alongside Zesco United, Red Arrows will represent Zambia in the CAF Champions League.
Zesco United's qualification was confirmed after their impressive 5-0 victory against Trident FC in their Week 33 match over the weekend. Trident FC had already been relegated, so the win for Zesco was decisive. Going into the match, Zesco United needed just one more win from their remaining two games to qualify. This victory boosted them to fifty-nine points, an unassailable lead, as even if their closest competitors, Power Dynamos and FC MUZA, win their remaining games, they cannot surpass Zesco's points tally.
The match against Trident FC was a showcase of Zesco's dominance. Striker Enock Sakala Junior was the standout player, scoring four of the five goals. His remarkable performance propelled him into the race for the league's top scorer, taking his tally to twelve goals for the season, just one match before the end of the Zambian Super League season. Despite Sakala's impressive run, Freddy Michael still leads the top scorers' chart with fourteen golas, having left Green Eagles during the mid-season transfer window.
Zesco United is no stranger to CAF competitions. They have participated in the CAF Champions League nine times and have made six appearances in the CAF Confederation Cup. Their last participation in a CAF competition was in 2022, where they experienced an unusual early exit from the CAF Champions League in the preliminary round. This was a rare setback for Zesco, who have a history of advancing beyond the initial stages.
As for the other teams vying for a top spot, FC MUZA lost 2-0 to Kansanshi Dynamos, leaving them fourth on the table with fifty points. Power Dynamos, however, managed a 1-0 victory over Mufulira Wanderers, bringing their total to fifty-five points and placing them third in the standings.
