Matchday 11

Luton Town v Liverpool

Kenilworth Road
Luton, England
Sunday, 5 November 2023
Kick-off is at 18h30

Liverpool will be looking to avoid a potential slip-up when they travel to Kenilworth Road for a first-ever Premier League meeting with Luton on Sunday, November 5 in the late kick-off.

The two teams last faced off in the FA Cup on 15 January 2008 when the Reds triumphed 5-0 in a fifth-round replay at Anfield after the Hatters held them to a 1-1 draw in Bedfordshire nine days earlier.

Jurgen Klopp's side cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on October 29 to stay in touch with the frontrunners in fourth place as a second consecutive victory maintained the three-point gap to league leaders Tottenham.

Arsenal (2nd) and Manchester City (3rd) are still a point ahead of the Merseysiders after both clubs won on matchday 10, as did Aston Villa, who remain a point behind them in fifth spot.

Luton have found the going tough on their debut in the Premier League, winning just one of their opening 10 matches to sit 18th in the standings.

Rob Edwards' side went down 3-1 at Villa Park to suffer their third defeat in four games since their historic 2-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park.

The Hatters are only a point adrift of safety though, and have a four-point cushion to rock-bottom Sheffield United, who also lost on matchday 10 along with Burnley (19th).

Elijah Adebayo was a regular starter for Luton last term as they won promotion via the Championship play-offs, but he's been included in the starting line-up just four times out of his 10 appearances. The striker, who has two goals to his name in 2023-24, used his height to good effect against Villa after his header caused panic in the opposition box and Ezri Konsa's header back to Emiliano Martinez bounced down off the crossbar in off the goalkeeper.

Mohamed Salah is doing his best to challenge Erling Haaland for the Golden Boot and trails the Manchester City hotshot by three goals after scoring in the win over Forest. It was the Egyptian star's fifth goal in three games and he's found the back of the net in all but four of his 10 appearances.

Edwards has urged his players to learn from the experience against the Villans and pointed to their ability to stay in the fight as a big plus.

"It's down to us to learn and get better, and we will do," he said. "If we can take anything from this game now it's that we kept going, and stayed in it for as long as possible and we didn't go under, and there are things there that can make us better.

"We are going to come up against other teams like this, maybe even better, and we've got to make sure that we improve on key areas.

"Yes, there are mistakes that happen. There are always mistakes, we are only human, but we'll improve and we'll learn from it."

Klopp feels the Reds can still improve in terms of creativity and controlling games better after they dropped off towards the end of the first half against the Tricky Trees.

"Creating without losing the compactness is pretty much the idea behind. If you have to chase a game, it's obviously a completely different task," the German said.

"If it's an open game then it's a different task, but if you are really in control then why should you not stay in control? The last five minutes before half-time, all of a sudden we were a bit too deep and they just could chip the balls there.

"One-on-one situation... we won the situation but then it was a corner or a throw-in, which is by the way pretty much the same for Nottingham Forest, and these are the moments where we have to improve, clearly.

"In creative things, you always can improve. That is always possible because the boys have a lot of potential so we have to use it fully."
