2023/24 English Premier League
Matchday 12

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Tottenham Hotspur

Molineux
Wolverhampton, England
Saturday, 11 November 2023
Kick-off is at 14h30

Tottenham will look to put the disappointment of their first Premier League defeat in 2023-24 behind them when they travel to Molineux for a clash with Wolves on Saturday, November 11 in the lunchtime kick-off.

Spurs saw their unbeaten start to the campaign come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday, November 7 as they were knocked off the league summit by Manchester City.

The Citizens hammered Bournemouth 6-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, November 4 to go one point clear of Ange Postecoglou's side at the top of the table, while Arsenal also tasted defeat for the first time this term after going down 1-0 to Newcastle at St James' Park.

Liverpool failed to take advantage as they too dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Luton at Kenilworth Road on Sunday, November 5, although they climbed above the Gunners (4th) up to third position on goals scored.

Wanderers lost for the first time in five matches after Sheffield United scored a dramatic late penalty to clinch a 2-1 win at Bramall Lane - their first three-point haul of the season.

Gary O'Neil's side dropped down to 14th position, with Nottingham Forest (13th) having climbed above them in the standings courtesy of a 2-0 triumph over Aston Villa at the City Ground.

The Black Country club are just three points adrift of the top 10 and two behind West Ham (12th), who were beaten 3-2 by Brentford to make it three defeats on the spin.

Hwang Hee-Chan has been one of the standout players for Wolves this term and he was heavily involved in most of their attacks against the Blades. The South Korean striker created a good chance for Matheus Cunha before pushing the ball into the path of Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, who scored his first goal for his new club. Hwang is Wanderers' leading scorer with six goals and has now registered two assists in 11 appearances.

Eric Dier could have a significant part to play in the absence of Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie, who were both sent off in the defeat to Chelsea, while Micky van de Ven was forced off just before half-time with an injury. The England defender' was introduced in the second half to make his first appearance of the campaign and he'll likely start at the back against Wolves.

O'Neil felt his team deserved at least a point in Sheffield, but he had hoped to come away with all three points after a controlled performance in the first half before letting standards slip in the second 45 minutes.

"I wanted to win the game, of course, and we went about it to win. At that point, with the way the second half went and us struggling to show what were doing first half, leaving here with a point would have deserved. There's no way we deserved to lose that football match," he said.

"I'd have been disappointed with a point, but it would have been better than where I'm sat now. We move on, everyone will feel bad tonight and tomorrow, but Monday we need to get to work on a big game against Tottenham next week."

Postecoglou acknowledged that things got out of control following their two reds cards, but praised his players for putting in a shift to stay in the game until the 90th minute when Nicolas Jackson scored twice.

"It's a hard game to analyse but in terms of effort, will and determination it was an outstanding effort by the lads," he told SPURSPLAY. "I thought we started really well, scored a good goal, then we were inches away from scoring a good second, but it was offside.

"Then the game got out of control, there was a lot happening that made the game a little bit not within the parameters we want to play. It felt like after that there were a lot of disruptions. I thought they gave everything they could and, unfortunately, it wasn't enough.

"We'll let the dust settle, let the boys recover, obviously we'll have a few absences next week. Micky looks quite significant, but we'll just have to see what happens. We'll dust ourselves off and prepare for next week."
