2024/25 English Premier League
Matchday 10
Manchester United v Chelsea
Old Trafford
Manchester, England
Sunday, 3 November 2024
Kick-off is at 18h30

Manchester United are set to begin the post Erik ten Hag era when they entertain Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday, November 3 in the late kick-off.

Ten Hag was sacked less than 24 hours after the Red Devils suffered a 2-1 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium on October 27, which left his team languishing down in 14th place.

The Dutchman paid the price for collecting just 11 points from his opening nine matches in 2024-25 and compatriot Ruud van Nistelrooy has been handed the reins on an interim basis.

United have now gone through eight managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of the 2012-13 season after delivering the last of the club's 13 Premier League titles.

The Blues gave an immediate response to their 2-1 loss at Liverpool on October 20 as they bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge seven days later.

Enzo Maresca's side moved up to fifth in the standings, one point outside the UEFA Champions League places and one ahead of Brighton (6th) and Nottingham Forest (7th).

In team news, Leny Yoro (ankle), Harry Maguire (calf) and Kobbie Mainoo (thigh) remain unavailable for the hosts, although Jonny Evans could come back into contention, while Luke Shaw (calf), Tyrell Malacia (knee), Mason Mount and Antony (ankle) are rated doubtful. The visitors have a near clean bill of health, with Omari Kellyman (thigh) the only casualty for the trip to Manchester.

United defender Lisandro Martinez expressed his disappointment with the result against the Hammers which ultimately cost Ten Hag his job, but the Argentina international says the players need to keep believing that they can turn things around.

"Everyone fights and we give everything, but I think we have to give more," Martinez told MUTV. "We have to know that in football it is a mental game and we have to keep believing and believe to the end.

"Be hungry and today we played very well in the first half, but in the second half we dropped [our levels]. We concede the two goals and we couldn't win the game. I am so disappointed today, honestly."

Maresca was delighted with the performance of his players both on and off the ball to claim what he felt was a "deserved" win against the Magpies.

"I am very happy with the performance today because in some moments on the ball, we were unbelievable," the Italian said.

"There were some good combinations and the way we prepared the game was exactly there. Off the ball, they fought together and showed they deserved to win. This is important."
