What to know about Matsuyama
The 32-year-old became the first-ever Japanese professional golfer to win a men's major golf championship when he was crowned champion at the 2021 Masters Tournament.
Matsuyama is the most successful Japanese member of the PGA Tour in history with 10 wins and he is also a two-time winner of tournaments in the World Golf Championships.
Latest news
The two-time Waste Management Phoenix Open winner has been out of action since he took part in the 2024 Tour Championship last month - finishing 16th.
Matsuyama is currently placed seventh on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), and his best overall ranking is second place.
Why Matsuyama is one of the favourites
The current season has seen the 2011 World University Games gold medalist record two victories in the 2024 PGA Tour.
Matsuyama was crowned champion at the Genesis Invitational in February before winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August.
The talented golfer, who scooped a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in his home country, Japan, has done well in the Zozo Championship over the years.
Matsuyama finished second behind champion Tiger Woods in the inaugural Zozo Championship in 2019 before being crowned champion in 2021.
What did he say
“It was one of my biggest goals to win in front of the Japanese fans here in this country. So, happy that I’ll be able to accomplish that," Matsuyama said after winning the 2021 Zozo Championship.
“I tried hard to prevent him (Tiger Woods) from achieving the historical win, especially in the last six holes. I was just not good enough at that time but I learned course management from him.
“It’s just great to be able to play in front of so many fans here in Japan and to be able to play well. I’m thrilled.”
