2024/25 English Premier League
Matchday 5
Crystal Palace v Manchester United
Selhurst Park
London, England
Saturday, 21 September 2024
Kick-off is at 18h30

Last season will still be fresh in the minds of Manchester United when they head to South London for a clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday, September 21 in the late kick-off.

Selhurst Park has not been a happy hunting ground for the Red Devils in recent times and a chastening 4-0 defeat on 6 May 2024 extended their winless streak at Palace to four games.

The Eagles did the league double over United after claiming a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford 12 months ago and Erik ten Hag's side will be gunning for revenge this season.

The FA Cup champions arrested a two-match losing streak with a 3-0 success over newly-promoted Southampton at St Mary's on September 14 which lifted them up to 10th place.

United remain six points adrift of neighbours Manchester City, who maintained their perfect start to the campaign to stay two points clear of Arsenal (2nd) and Newcastle (3rd).

Oliver Glasner's side are still searching for their first win in 2024-25 after a 2-2 draw with newcomers Leicester (15th) on September 14 left them just one point clear of the relegation zone in 16th spot.

In team news, the hosts could welcome back Trevoh Chalobah (chest), but Chadi Riad (knee) and Matheus Franca (abdomen) remain unavailable. Luke Shaw (calf), Rasmus Hojlund (thigh) and Victor Lindelof (ankle) are closing in on their returns, although Leny Yoro (ankle), Tyrell Malacia (knee) and Mason Mount (thigh) are set to miss out once more, while Lisandro Martinez will be assessed closer to kick-off.

Glasner admitted going behind for the fourth game in a row is a bit of a concern, but praised the fighting spirit of his players as they rescued a point against the Foxes.

"A big compliment to the team that they always kept going and never lost the belief. There was great support from the stands and at the end, we got the well-deserved draw," the Austrian said.

"It was a lot of pressure and mentally it was a very difficult game. Being 1-0 down and it was the fourth time in the Premier League now that we are 1-0 down so it doesn't make it easy.

"At half-time we're, 'ok, let's come back' and one minute later, it's 2-0. So it's really mentally tough and the players' reaction was great. Playing forward, scoring the first goal with a nice attack. We had a very good impact today from the subs and so we'll take the 2-2."

Ten Hag was pleased to see United go on to dominate the Saints after Andre Onana saved Cameron Archer's penalty in the 33rd minute, although he felt they could have put the game to bed earlier.

"First 20 minutes was hard, tough, but that is often [the case] in games, you have to get a foothold in the game," the Dutchman told MUTV.

"Once Andre stopped the penalty, straight after, we scored a goal with Matthijs de Ligt, the game was all ours and we dominate the game from that point.

"I think we should have scored earlier on, we had the chances and we had the control, and we create some good chances to score the third goal earlier on.

"Of course, we are happy when you bring a sub on who has an impact and he [Garnacho] was the one who downsized the opponent to 10 with a good action and then a good finish.

"I think also the rest [of Garnacho's performance], I was happy with this sub and that is how players should act from the bench and we need more from this."
